We take English and also Ulster notes too. Though in Glasgow they'll take your phone and jewellery into the bargain. If you know what I mean? I've noticed in England and Wales the look of puzzlement when you hand over a scottish note. It's laughable! Sorry, I don't think I can take that! As if a Scotsman with scottish money is something questionable!!! pfff!

No english notes and one pound coins are readily used in Glasgow.

English banknotes are legal tender in Scotland, and vice versa.
Coinage is common between both countries, so no problem whatsoever.

To clarify for you.

English and Scottish bank notes are the same currency (pounds sterling). You can use either in either country.

In some small towns in England they sometimes give you a hard time using English bank notes which is just silly.

The reason why Scotland has different notes is because they are printed by Scottish banks as opposed to England where English banks print their notes.

you can take english but will get scottish change but dont worry because you can also spend scottish in england ,ive had no problems.have a great time ,glasgow is fantastic

Yes, bejman is right - Scottish notes are in fact not legal tender in Scotland itself. In Scotland, earlier legislation restricted legal tender status to Bank of England one pound notes. When these were withdrawn, in 1983, the legislation was not amended, so actually Scotland has no legal tender bank notes at all!

You can use English money in Scotland. Scottish money is accepted in major retailer chains, hotels etc in England without any problems - I've only ever been refused by foreign temp cashiers who've never seen Scottish money before. You can go to a bank or post office and just ask them to swap Scottish notes to English notes - you don't need to specifically use the Bureau Exchange services (though the queue is usually much shorter!)
