I think thats when the little black dress come in handy. It will go nice with any assessories you have. You could have a couple of dresses for evening wear, a couple of causual dresses and a couple of tops and skirts or trouser suits. You just need a good pair of evening shoes- pick a colour that goes with any dress, a pair of walking shoes ( or casuals) and trainers for any activities you might be doing.

I always wear my bulkiest shoes on the plane, and I try to pack the shoes that are the most versatile (i.e. can be worn with the most outfits).

I try to pack items that mix and match well so that I can create combinations that I normally don't wear but will still work....that way I am not packing several individual outfits but more several pieces that can be part of several outfits. I also try to pack around a color or two that helps make things more likely to coordinate. I pack jewelry/scarves/belts or other accessories to help change the look (and they take up less space).

For example, you only need 1-2 dresses for cocktail parties since you're not likely to see the same people at both of them (and they know you are travelling so won't necessarily expect a dfiferent outfit all the time).

The best rule is to put everything you think you're taking on the bed and then take only half.

I flew to Africa (for a new assignment) and my suitcase was lost for almost a month. I had a few items with me in a carryon and I bought a couple different tops but I really learnt how to stretch out a wardrobe then.
