I wish to buy a visiting friend a camera, but want to ensure that they will be able to use it when they get home to London.
I just wish to verify if the memory cards are the same in the UK as they are here, and if the batteries are the same as well.

All the kit should be compatible world wide. The manufacturers would have ensured this… otherwise it would be mental for them to create different standards in battery types/memory cards. All manufacturers adhere to current ISO standards!
The only thing would possibly be the power supply, as different countries have different mains sockets/supplies. Though this can easily be fixed with a cheap travel adapter.
So you are quite safe buying this! Unless you’re time-travelling from either the long lost past or from the way distant future ;o)
Yes they sell batteries and printers in England. We don’t live in caves any more.
Yes !! Just double check it reads 240 V somewhere on the pack !!

They will be able to get the supplies, that is, after they pay VAT taxes for anything they bought abroad. It will be up to them to convince security it was a genuine gift.
