Enjoying Amsterdam on a shoestring?

GEMZ asked:

Me and my friends really want to go on a city break from Norwich on a budget. We are thinking about Amsterdam, have people got any recommendations/tips/advice? I have been before, but I was wondering has anyone stayed in a really nice hostel for example?
Noriwch to amsterdam is not that expensive travel wise, other places we'd have to fly to.

You can safe on lodgings by looking good before booking a hostel or hotel.
Best go to several comparison sites and next contact the hostel or hotel you find cheapest (as some sites do add a bit when doing the booking.)

Have you checked the Harwich ferry, as the prices and conditions are different now from what they were till last year:

When in Amsterdam you can easily safe on eating, go to the Febo for a full stomach for about 5 Euro, (not healthy, meat and chips, like your fish and chips,) Showarma (different spellings possible, Donner or more traditional kebab,) take out pizza, or get a bread and some toppings from a supermarket.

A lot of the sight seeing can be done for free like a walk along the canals or window shopping, you can safe a bit by not going to an expensive club but drink in a corner cafe on one of the canals or the Utrechtse straat.
Set yourself a budget for drinks, smoking and so on, (as those are often the most expensive parts of the trip,) and just enjoy walking through Amsterdam without getting plastered or stoned.

Here is a site with much info on what to do in Amsterdam, often with prices or links to the site of whatever they mention:
    (Has a map too.)
