Do I need a passport to go to Niagara Falls Canada driving from US?

amig asked:

Planning a trip to Niagara Falls Canadian side, do I need passports for my family if I'm flying into Buffulo and driving across the border. I heard rumors I don't but do if I'm driving back from Canada. Can't I just drive back from Canada (cross the border)without a passport? Please advise, I'm very confused. I'm afraid if I drive to Canada, may not be able to drive back without the passport. Any websites?

You need a passport to get to Mexico.
That is the new law in the United States as of January 1, 2008.

Yes, you do need a passport when driving from the US to Canada and vice versa. They just started to check for passports this past year.

not yet , for now bring absolute proof of who you are [ drivers license , etc . } Later this year , you will have to have a passport to go to Canada , and to come back . Get one now , they take up to 3 months to arrive

All travelers by air to Canada must have a passport. For those traveling by water or land, you do not yet need a passport. It's not so much the getting into Canada that's the problem. As long as you have photo ID and proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate), they'll let you in. But the US Border Patrol won't let you back without a passport, beginning, last I heard, sometime in 2009. The date has already been pushed back a couple of times due to complaints, but the air travel is a done deal. No passport, you don't get anywhere near the plane.

Lila gave you the only CORRECT answer...passports are NOT needed for LAND travel to and from Canada. You need the photo I.D. and proof of citizenship...EITHER a passport OR a birth certificate.

If you're an American citizen, you don't need a passport when crossing the border into Canada by LAND or SEA until June 2009. You need a driver's license and birth certificate.

PS: you'll need a valid passport to travel by AIR

I live right beside Niagara Falls (Canadian side) and cross the border frequently. And no you do not need a passport. That is only required for air or sea travel. Proper government is id like a driver's licence, birth certificate and any other id is all you will need. Bring at least 2 to 3 pieces.Coming to Canada is a lot easier for American's than you think. You get asked a few question's and you are on your way.Hope this helped and enjoy your trip.
