My friends and I are planning a trip to New York in February. There will be eight of us total. We’d like to stay somewhere fairly economical and safe. I’ve priced staying at the Wellington and the Courtyard Marriott at the Laguardia Airport. The Marriott is less expensive by about $100. We are only staying for a few days. We’d like to do a bit of sightseeing, but mostly shopping and dining. Which hotel would be better and why? Or if you have any other ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks!

The Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel.
3 Star hotel that is 10 minutes from Manhattan for under US$200.
Only drawback is the hotel is being renovated until September 2010.

We looked high and low for a hotel that could meet our criteria. We are a family of 6 and did not want to rent two rooms. We needed parking for a large SUV, and the kids wanted a pool. This hotel had it all! We were a bit nervous as we read some bad reviews, but after staying here I can honestly say this was a GREAT hotel. Large and clean. Great staff. Our room had a great view of the city. Two double beds, a pull out couch and a chair. The hotel provided a crib when we realized we forgot our porta crib. The bathroom was clean and had a full sized tub. Our room had a fridge, microwave and cabinets for food. It was VERY easy to get into the city via ferry or bus, both of which leave from right outside the hotel. We had a GREAT experience staying here and would highly recommend it!

La Guardia airport in a fair bit away from Manhattan which is where you’ll want to shop and sightsee. Look up Radio city apartments for prices, we have never stayed in them however friends of ours has and they are clean and basic but reasonabley priced and in the middle of midtown, which is where you really want to be especially if your only going to be there a couple of days. Even if you wanted to try hotels further uptown or downtown to see if you can get something cheaper, but I wouldn’t recommend staying near a hotel, because there isn’t a hotel in Manhattan, all 3 are a distance away from it. Good luck with finding something, enjoy your break, we went in May this year from Scotland and LOVED it.
Hey!
This site talks about subletting apartments in NYC as well as booking hotels for cheap in NYC. You may want to check it out.
I’ve sublet out my apartment many times this way and have done so for as little as $75 per day. You can save a lot by subletting.
You may also want to consider using Priceline’s name your own price option to get a room for as little as $80 per night for a nice 4 star hotel in Manhattan. As there are 8 of you total, you could get 3 rooms and get a roll-away to put 3 in two rooms and 2 in the third. I’m sure you could get the rooms for under $100 each room per night this way and save a ton and be in Masnhattan rather than way our near the airport.
Also, the airport you are talking about is a good ways away from Manhattan, which si where everything to see is. You should really consider booking a hotel in Manhattan to save yourself time and money going back and forth from the airport.
Good luck!
there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it’s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

New York is amazing. Even though I’m a bit too old, I always visit the giant Toys R Us. I love the shopping.
